#TBT: WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

November 16, 2018

I first visited White Sands National Monument when I was about eleven years old, and I was utterly fascinated by the landscape. I had never seen dunes before, and from the ripples to the way the sand sparkled under the sun, this was a spot that really stuck with me. In college I bookmarked a few sunset photos of White Sands that I found online, and I promised myself I'd return someday. Getting to see this landscape on my six-week Southwest road trip this spring was one of the highlights of that adventure, and I was lucky enough to camp out here for four nights. It's the only way to shoot sunrise and sunset on the dunes, and while the campsites aren't especially scenic, it's incredible to fall asleep in a sea of what feels like finely granulated sugar...
